This is an easy thing to search on the internet for lots of tips but you should know the essentials right away. Your puppy is already started! They have been used to seeing newspaper in their pen to potty on and they do use it, but not flawlessly yet. Although I do not recommend paper/pad training for the long term, in some cases it may be essential, as in high rise apartment buildings or in areas with extreme weather events. The point is that the puppy is already starting to understand that there are places to potty. You have to begin furthering their training right away.
Puppies will not potty near their bed (unless left there for far too long). An easy way to provide for success is to crate the puppy and take it outside often, every two hours at first (even at night). Note that crates should be the size of their bed only. Many crates come with adjustable dividers. Letting the pup roam around the house unattended is asking for problems. Take the puppy out immediately after eating or play time too. A structured schedule will help. If the puppy never has a chance to have an accident indoors, they are half way there to understanding that pottying only happens outside. When outside, give them the command of your choice when they are doing their business. Some people say “go potty,” or “hurry up.” As your puppy gets used to hearing this command during the act, they will start to go on command, which is extremely helpful when you may be in a hurry, traveling, or in other unusual circumstances. Consistency, patience and above all, kindness, are absolute requirements. It helps me to remember that it is really my fault for not getting them outside often enough if something untoward happens indoors.
